Romeyn House, Kingston
Project type
National Register Nomination and Historic Tax Credit
Date
2021-2024
Client
Private owner
This Gothic Revival-style cottage was in poor condition when the current owner purchased it with a vision of restoring its charm while accommodating three apartments. Originally built in 1853 by a prolific local carpenter, the house was expanded in 1870 for William and Mary Romeyn. Romeyn was a prominent newspaper publisher and printer in Kingston at the time. The couple was responsible for many of the house's noteworthy embellishments, including the elaborately carved gable screen and chamfered trusses, which were influenced by the Picturesque Movement.
This was a multi-phase preservation project that began with a National Register eligibility study. Subsequently, a full nomination was prepared, and historic tax credits were earned for the rehabilitation. The house was listed to the National Register in March 2024.
